Dr. Kim has worked in various institutions around the world including Wales University (Cardiff) for his Ph.D. degree, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Oxford University, and RIKEN and Kyoto University in Japan. He is one of the few microbiologists working on anaerobic microbes in Asia. His current research interests are: microbial fuel cell that generate electricity by treating organic wastewater; removal of heavy metal from wastewater; carbon monoxide fermentation to produce multi-carbon compounds; and microbial petroleum desul-furization. These areas are all related to the electron metabolisms of anaerobic bacteria. The anaerobic microbial petroleum desulfurization process has been transferred to an American company, and a Korean company adopted the microbial fuel cell to manufacture a biosensor to measure BOD. His group is actively collaborating with the University of Dundee, the University of Wales (Swansea) and the Michigan Biotechnology Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. at the Cardiff School of Bioscience at the University of Wales.
